Originally from Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province (Hofuf in Al-Hasa oasis, the centre of Saudi agriculture), the family first made its fortune through trading dates to India, and became enormously wealthy during the Gulf's pearling boom - famous for being Arabia's first millionaires (in the 1920s and 30s they were the richest family in Arabia).
