In Chapter 2, the progresses about laser cooling and trapping neutral atoms in each period of time are summarized, including slowing atomic beam, Doppler cooling, magneto-optical trap, Sisyphus cooling, polarization gradient cooling, velocity selective coherent population trapping, Raman cooling and so on. The hot topic in laser cooling, Bose-Einstein condensation is also mentioned. In Chapter 3, the progress we made on laser cooling of neutral atoms by red-shifted diffuse light in an optical integral sphere cavity is presented.
