A few researches have been devoted to the formation and distribution of space charge, therefore, in this paper we mainly focus on silicone rubber, the distributions of space charge of single layer silicone rubber and two layer mediums which composed by silicone rubber and EPDM or XLPE are measured under different electrical stress. The formation and changing mechanism of space charge of these mediums are investigated; we consider the instability of space charge under 70kV/mm can forecast the pre-breakdown of insulation, by comparing space charge distributions with stressing time and after short circuit for a while. The accumulation of space charge at interface can distort electrical field in the dielectric, which can cause partial discharge at the interfaces of polymers and affect the reliability of cables.
